Are you struggling to understand what you're experiencing? Do you find yourself wondering whether you're dealing with depression, anxiety, or perhaps both? As a counsellor working with people online and from my practice in West London, Oxford and Cheltenham, I often meet clients who are confused about their symptoms and what they mean. Understanding the difference can be an important first step towards getting the right support.
The Overlap Between Depression and Anxiety
Depression and anxiety often occur together, which can make it difficult to distinguish between them. In fact, many people experience symptoms of both conditions simultaneously. This overlap is completely normal and doesn't mean there's anything wrong with trying to understand what you're going through.
Recognising Depression
Depression typically involves a persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, and feelings of hopelessness about the future. You might notice changes in your sleep patterns, appetite, or energy levels. Many people describe feeling emotionally numb or disconnected from life around them.
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety, on the other hand, is characterised by excessive worry, restlessness, and a sense of impending danger or doom. You might experience physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, or difficulty breathing. Anxiety often focuses on future concerns and "what if" scenarios that feel difficult to control.
When They Coexist
It's entirely possible to experience both depression and anxiety at the same time. You might feel hopeless about the future whilst simultaneously worrying excessively about it. This combination can feel particularly overwhelming and confusing.
Why Labels Matter Less Than You Think
Whilst understanding your symptoms can be helpful, getting caught up in precise labels isn't always necessary. What matters most is recognising that you're struggling and that support is available. Both depression and anxiety are treatable conditions, and the strategies for managing them often overlap.
Moving Forward
Rather than trying to diagnose yourself, focus on acknowledging that something doesn't feel right and that you deserve support. A mental health professional can help you understand your specific experience and develop appropriate coping strategies.
